Andy has combined a life-long interest with railroading and
model railroading with a successful career in the hobby publishing field. He
got started sweeping floors for a local hobby shop when he was 14. Right
around that same time, he got his first photo published in Railfan
magazine. He was hooked.
While attending college he was the youngest member of the
school newspaper staff. He also worked as a temporary employee at the
Wisconsin office of the California-based Interurban Press and helped with
Pacific Rail News, Passenger Train Journal, and Prototype Modeler.
After college he worked for two northern Illinois
publications: the Rock River Valley Journal and the DeKalb County Newspaper.
Here he learned all aspects of publishing including darkroom work, computer
design, advertising sales, and editing.
In 1991 he joined Andover Junction Publications where he
worked on a number of books and magazines. From Andover Junction he moved to
Trains Magazine in the advertising department as well as FineScale Modeler
and the Steam Passenger Service Directory after winning first prize in a
Trains' magazine photo contest.
From Kalmbach Publishing Andy was hired by model railroad
manufacturer Wm. K. Walthers to manage Terminal Hobby Shop. Here he directed
model contests, special sales, seminars, as well as day-to-day operations.
After a brief return to Kalmbach, where he worked again in
the advertising department, this time for Scale Auto Enthusiast and Car
Modeler, Andy returned not only to the railroad field but also to Andover
Junction Publications as its dealer sales manager. At Andover Junction he
set up a large dealer sales base and also worked behind the scenes preparing
stories for magazines such as The Milwaukee Railroader and Private Varnish.
Today, Andy is thrilled to be a part of White River
Productions where his responsibilities include editor of the Rock Island
Technical Society's The Rocket, advertising
sales for Passenger Train Journal, and
editorial/production assistance for many other historical society magazines.
Andy lives in Paw Paw, Illinois with his wife, Wendy (an
instructor at Kishwaukee College as well as a published author and novelist)
and their three daughters Iana, Natalia, and Nina. In his spare time Andy
enjoys restoring their 1865 vintage house, playing catch with his dog Libby
and completing his record collection. He and his wife also handle the
publicity for the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra.
